Elizabeth's actions
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 1 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Nature
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 30 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 60 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 10 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Health
Daily Yoga, Thoughtful Stretching, and Self Care
My goal is to stretch and doing preventive care for at least 10 minutes every day. I feel like doing this now will help me avoid or mitigate sports injuries in the future, so that I can continue to compete competitively and remain active.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Host A Watch PartyWhat did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?
Elizabeth Burke 4/21/2023 8:20 AMI watched the Minimalists; Less is Now. It talked about the movement made by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus started to reduce the amount of stuff of in there lives to live a simpler life. I was really excited to watch it and was expecting to to talk about sustainable ways to reduce the amount of stuff you have and discuss some issues of consumerism but I hated how Millburn and Nicodemus framed minimalism as a religion and almost glorified poverty to explain how they founded the movement. I thought the guest speakers to the documentary were great in that they talked about how minimalism is a way to regain your independence and freedom from consumerism and the pressure to purchase things to look better socially but the segments with the founders were my least favorite parts. Overall, I thought the documentary made some good points and explained some good concepts with the exclusion of the founders of the movement -
Elizabeth Burke 4/20/2023 5:05 PMI really liked how I approached the ecochallenge this year! I just moved to Carlisle when the ecochallenge was just getting started, so I used it as a well to forge new habits in a new area. I chose actions of things I wanted to get started for myself in a new environment. I practiced walking to work and the grocery store rather than driving, and I started keeping an excel doc to track my purchases as well as trying to keep my new space clean and uncluttered. I'm really hope I can keep this going past the ecochallenge; I think I can do it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Elizabeth Burke 4/15/2023 1:44 PMBalance is important to sustainability because in order for balance to be achieved, one needs to recognize all the stakeholders, factors, and resources at play in order to produce more equitable solutions. If a "solution" only addresses one facet of the problem or excludes a stakeholder, the solution can stand against the test of time and isn't sustainable. Sustainability requires acknowledging everyone needs and the number of resources available to meet those needs. One needs to respect the resources we have (whether it's water, food, green spaces) in order to protect them, and we need to divide them equitably among people to prevent exploitation of those resources. Key to this is understanding the balance between how much we take and how much we give back to the environment and it's creatures to support a good quality of life for everyone for years to come.-

Elizabeth Burke 4/12/2023 7:57 PMI think overall our campus is going well in each of their actions that they selected. However, I think it's interesting seeing the distribution of actions selected across campus. Some types of actions were more selected than others and most seem to be catered to personal health and well-being. For example, more exercising, eating more fruits and veggies, getting more sleep. This goes to show that our society, or more specifically American culture, doesn't naturally prioritize these things in our lives, which only makes it trickier to make time to advocate for a cause like more sustainable practices because we can't really do that unless we put ourselves first. -
Elizabeth Burke 4/10/2023 7:23 PMI think it's going well! I think it can be difficult sometimes to make time for your well-being, so I like how the ecochallenge can help you structure your days that you can create this time depending on the challenges you selected. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch?
Elizabeth Burke 4/09/2023 6:48 PMI noticed how vibrant the grass was and how cool the air was. Even though there wasn't much a temperature change between yesterday and today, the sun warmed everything up so it was much more pleasant -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Elizabeth Burke 4/08/2023 6:54 AMGoing through everything made me realize how many subscriptions I had that weren't necessary and the subscriptions were only taking up unnecessary mental space. After unsubscribing to a lot of marketing campaigns, I feel refreshed now that I can keep my apartment and email inbox more clean and removed from unnecessary communications -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Elizabeth Burke 4/05/2023 8:01 PMThe hours I sleep I get now vary a lot due to my various commitments. I want to work to get better control of my sleep so that even though I may be waking up and going to bed at different times, I can still get the same number of hours each night. So far, watching the clock has helped inform my decisions of whether to stay up later to finish what I am doing or whether it would be better to wait until the next day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Track my PurchasesWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
Elizabeth Burke 4/05/2023 7:58 PMI'm noticing that I opt for purchasing takeout whenever I am strapped for time and/or haven't had time to plan or prep meals for later times in the week -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Elizabeth Burke 4/04/2023 6:30 PMThis statistic doesn't describe my own transportation habits. Most places where I visit or go to are 10 or more miles away. I live and grew up in a more rural community, so you have to drive everywhere to get around. Walking is not an option. However, I just moved to Carlisle, and I have enjoyed walking more to get around. I only use my car for small trips if I don't have enough time to walk to where I need to go around town
