REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Meet My Local FarmersWhen you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? How can knowing their food producers enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?
Emmelina Korb 4/21/2023 5:30 AMKnowing who produces my food give me peace of mind - I know animals were treated humanely and respected, and produce is grown organically. Closeness to your food is not something everyone needs or likes to have (some would rather not think about the animals that go into the meat they buy), but I think it is important to support local farmers. Quality of product can increase the more it is funded! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Learn About Renewable EnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Emmelina Korb 4/21/2023 5:23 AMEnergy usage is an obvious area to improve upon, but many choose to not due to high costs or concerns of quality. I act on sustainable energy to increase awareness, encourage others to participate, and help fund the growth this sector needs. -
Emmelina Korb 4/21/2023 5:19 AMHappy last day of EcoChallenge - incredible work by everyone! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Emmelina Korb 4/20/2023 6:09 AMIn the Carlisle PA borough, there are a number of items that are not accepted in the typical roadside bins: electronics, metal, cans, etc. These items must be taken to nearby scrap metal yards for trade in. There are a number of options within driving distance. Depending on how much is brought in, you can make a few bucks! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Emmelina Korb 4/20/2023 6:05 AMThese traits aren't expressed only in the way you present yourself. The language you use, attitude you carry through life, and people you surround yourself with all help to express your personality and values. Everyone is a complex mix of thoughts, ideas, experiences, etc that can't be simplified just to what others see! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Emmelina Korb 4/19/2023 7:22 AMI live in an apartment with no green space available, so I am planting herbs to sit on my kitchen windowsill. This way they can get sun and some fresh air as they grow! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Emmelina Korb 4/18/2023 7:14 AMSpending time outside clears my head and allows me to reset. Time spent outside is refreshing and lets me clear my head so I can tackle problems with a new sense of energy and vigor. -
Emmelina Korb 4/14/2023 5:44 AMOne week left in this year's EcoChallenge - let's continue to make an impact! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Emmelina Korb 4/13/2023 6:37 AMI am planning a family vacation to Maine for a week and have decided to drive instead of flying. There will be 5 of us in one hybrid vehicle. While this plan will increase our travel time, our emissions will be reduced dramatically. Furthermore, we will have opportunities to get out and interact with nature on our drive - we plan to make stops for hiking and visiting parks!
