Amiyah's actions
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 60 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 40 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Amiyah Priebe 4/18/2023 6:09 PMI feel more grounded and in touch when I'm walking instead of driving. I'm able to pay attention to details and appreciate my surrounding. My mind wanders and allows me to observe life through a clearer lens. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Amiyah Priebe 4/18/2023 5:46 PMMy roommate and I are typical college students with a coffee addiction. I find myself getting coffee at least once a day- that's a lot of plastic coffee cups in a week. I have always skipped out on straws because of their impact on the environment, but about a year ago I recognized the amount of plastic cups I was consuming. I invested in a reusable mug and brought it to school with me. The first few weeks here, I went to get coffee with my friends and repeatedly forgot to bring my mug. Each time I ordered I remembered that my mug was sitting at home, in my closet. I felt guilty. After a few times of forgetting, I went home and placed the mug on my desk- maybe if it was in sight I would see it on my way out and grab it. This didn't work either. I ended up putting the mug in my car, used it, rinsed it out, and reused it for about a month. It worked. I feel satisfied when I use my mug, knowing that in a month's time I saved 30 plastic cups from entering landfills. I've also influenced my friends to use reusable mugs! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Amiyah Priebe 4/18/2023 5:36 PMAs a student-athlete at Dickinson, I place a lot of value on sleep and recovery. I would like to get at least an extra hour of sleep each night than I am now. In order to successfully obtain this goal, I need to be diligent with my time. When I go to bed late it's usually because I have a lot of homework to finish after practice. To avoid this I need to dedicate more time to completing my work between classes in the morning/afternoon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Amiyah Priebe 4/18/2023 5:29 PMWhen I first committed to reducing my plastic consumption, I found it difficult to get into the routine of remembering to bring my reusable bags to the grocery store with me. Even when I forgot my bags, I refused to accept disposable plastic bags and would carry everything out in my hands. To avoid this inconvenient balance act, I filled my trunk with reusable bags so that they'd always be there when I needed them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Amiyah Priebe 4/18/2023 6:37 AMPracticing gratitude allows me step back and appreciate the things I often take for granted. The Earth provides a surplus of resources that I couldn't live without. The least I could do to pay it back is clean up after myself and advocate against environmental hazards. I am motivated to lead myself and others to a sustainable lifestyle.
