Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

I feel more grounded and in touch when I'm walking instead of driving. I'm able to pay attention to details and appreciate my surrounding. My mind wanders and allows me to observe life through a clearer lens.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

My roommate and I are typical college students with a coffee addiction. I find myself getting coffee at least once a day- that's a lot of plastic coffee cups in a week. I have always skipped out on straws because of their impact on the environment, but about a year ago I recognized the amount of plastic cups I was consuming. I invested in a reusable mug and brought it to school with me. The first few weeks here, I went to get coffee with my friends and repeatedly forgot to bring my mug. Each time I ordered I remembered that my mug was sitting at home, in my closet. I felt guilty. After a few times of forgetting, I went home and placed the mug on my desk- maybe if it was in sight I would see it on my way out and grab it. This didn't work either. I ended up putting the mug in my car, used it, rinsed it out, and reused it for about a month. It worked. I feel satisfied when I use my mug, knowing that in a month's time I saved 30 plastic cups from entering landfills. I've also influenced my friends to use reusable mugs!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

As a student-athlete at Dickinson, I place a lot of value on sleep and recovery. I would like to get at least an extra hour of sleep each night than I am now. In order to successfully obtain this goal, I need to be diligent with my time. When I go to bed late it's usually because I have a lot of homework to finish after practice. To avoid this I need to dedicate more time to completing my work between classes in the morning/afternoon.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

When I first committed to reducing my plastic consumption, I found it difficult to get into the routine of remembering to bring my reusable bags to the grocery store with me. Even when I forgot my bags, I refused to accept disposable plastic bags and would carry everything out in my hands. To avoid this inconvenient balance act, I filled my trunk with reusable bags so that they'd always be there when I needed them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

Practicing gratitude allows me step back and appreciate the things I often take for granted. The Earth provides a surplus of resources that I couldn't live without. The least I could do to pay it back is clean up after myself and advocate against environmental hazards. I am motivated to lead myself and others to a sustainable lifestyle.
