Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

I'm thinking of walking to and from work - that would only be 4.2 miles/day. As long as I keep my bag light, it shouldn't be a problem.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Heather Webb's avatar
    Heather Webb 4/21/2023 3:33 PM
Absolutely! I love to check out the architecture in our historic town, and all of the ways my neighbors are using their spaces.
The sounds of the birds lately have been wonderful for stress reduction, too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Heather Webb 4/21/2023 3:32 PM
I think that it helps me see the positive things in life. It's too easy to get caught up in all of the obstacles.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

My cousin and I joined an online challenge together. She lives in another state, but this enables us to talk while we walk and feel like we're still together.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Food Lifestyle
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

    Heather Webb 4/21/2023 3:29 PM
This is so true. I was stressed at my last job, and wasn't eating very well (fast food). My blood work came back so bad that the doctor didn't even want me to leave her office. I'd never had an issue before then.
I left that job, and began to have time to cook at home and enjoy healthy meals again. My blood work is looking good now!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Heat and Cool Naturally
What are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?

I lucked out and bought a house with solar panels. My car happens to be a plug-in hybrid, so all of my in-town travel has been on solar power, unless I walk (even better!).
I'm going to switch out my gas water heater to an electric one soon - all that is left is heat. I'll find a way!

I was surprised to learn how my efforts towards living a "greener" life has grown. This challenge helped me refocus and look at things with a clear mindset. I often pick one thing to change in my life at a time. Once that becomes habit, I move on to the next. I do think that we should be able to pick more categories; there seems to be a limit.
I was proud of all of the items that I could tick off that I was already doing, and grateful that this challenge pushed me to address my dripping showerhead.
