I think one key way to reduce accumulation of unnecessary things is to reuse what I currently have. For example, many students want to find wall decor to decorate their dorm rooms. By reusing old artwork (ie. repainting) I have at home that I don't feel strongly about anymore I can help reduce unnecessary item accumulation.
