    Community Host A Watch Party
What did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?

We watched The Story of Plastic and learned how our waste crisis and our fossil fuel crisis are connected. The film was a sobering reminder of just how much the oil and gas industry controls our buying habits, and re-inspired me to try to reduce my personal waste footprint while also fighting for systemic changes and stronger policies to hold Big Oil accountable for the environmental destruction they have caused.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Support a Sharing Economy
What are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community?

I think we have a great sharing economy at Northland, from our re-use room and stuff just labeled "free" on tables around campus, to our ability to share meal swipes with each other. Capitalism teaches us that ownership is something to be guarded and protected, that the people around us are to be feared. But if we stop acting from a place of fear or possession and start acting from a place of trust in one another - trusting that my neighbor is a fundamentally decent person, trusting that if I share my abundance I will not lose it, trusting that I can set healthy boundaries with others and they can do the same with me - we might find that the world is a better place. We might find that we can rely on each other a little bit more. We might find that sharing doesn't start and end with stuff; we can share our time, our knowledge, our wisdom. These are the things that make a sharing economy flourish and sustain itself.

Simplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?

Simply thinking in "needs vs wants" and making lists to curb impulsive purchases is a good way for me to prevent clutter from accumulating. I also try to consider the timeline of something before I purchase it or take it home. How many months of use will I get out of this object? Is there an expiration date, or will this become obsolete in the near future? How will I dispose of it when it no longer serves me? Asking questions like that helps me determine if I should purchase things.
